Assessing extinction risk from geographic distribution data in Neotropical freshwater fishes

چکیده
Abstract The IUCN Red List (RL) provides high-quality conservation assessments for individual species, yet the rate and scale of environmental deterioration globally challenges community to develop expedited methods risk assessment. Here we compare threat 3,001 species Neotropical freshwater fishes (NFF) in IUCN–RL using readily accessible data types as proxies extinction risk: geographic range, elevation, publication date. Furthermore, taxonomic alone, generated preliminary 2,334 NFF currently awaiting assessment, identifying an additional 671 potentially threatened. This number threatened represents increase 59% over assigned categories by IUCN–RL. These results substantially expand from 422 on RL 1,093 or threatened, representing about 18% all species. Extinction is greater with smaller ranges, which inhabit upland rivers, were described more recently. We propose Central Southern Andes, Eastern Guiana Shield priorities upcoming assessment risk.
